Sign up with Bill Roy to either provide food for the residents at Hope Warming Center or to help out serving that night. For those who are serving, we usually arrive at approximately 7:15 p.m., which gives us plenty of time to set up. Dinner usually starts at 8:00, and we are cleaned up and leave by 9:00. Due to the fact that the HWC has a small kitchen and we have a tremendous turnout, it would be easier if Bill Roy could come by and pick up items from those who are preparing food but not serving. Please let him know. |

Birmingham Police Department
Jan. 09, 2017
Clemence, 52, is the new police chief of Birmingham, and for him it’s a dream job come true. He grew up in Southfield and graduated from Groves High School. He was pursuing a degree in marketing at Michigan State University when he switched gears to criminal justice. Birmingham hired Clemence in 1985, and he steadily worked his way up the ladder from patrol and investigations, to division commander and chief. In 2007, he attended the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. “As chief, I take a lot of pride in how we are perceived by the community,” he said. “I think there are some expectations on what a Birmingham police officer should be like and I want to make sure those expectations are met. Right now, we have a large group of younger officers and I want to make sure under my watch that they understand what it means to be a Birmingham police officer. I want things done the Birmingham way, which to me means everything is done with professionalism and honesty and integrity in mind.” Clemence grew up watching “Adam-12” and was the first in his family to become a police officer. It didn’t last long: his younger brother, Matt, is a 20-year veteran with the city of Northville, while his oldest son, JD, was just hired by the Auburn Hills Police Department. “I couldn’t be more proud,” Clemence said of his son. “You need good people in this job and here’s a young man, 23 years old, a college graduate who’s logical and intelligent and a good person — and he wants to help out others.” His daughter, Samantha, is a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac, while his youngest son, Ben, attends Saginaw Valley State. Clemence said he and his wife Alison are very proud of their three children, and that all three played college sports. As for role models, he looks toward his parents. “Dad was in sales and mom worked in the Birmingham schools for years as the secretary for the deputy superintendent,” he said. “They’ve always been supportive of me ... and the fact I got to be chief really makes them proud. They couldn’t be happier for me.” |

Kids Kicking Cancer
Jan. 30, 2017
Kids Kicking Cancer is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides weekly classes for children, both inpatient and outpatient, in the mind-body techniques found in the martial arts. Our mission is “to ease the pain of very sick children while empowering them to heal physically, spiritually and emotionally.” Through an innovative program that merges modern integrative medicine with traditional martial arts, Kids Kicking Cancer addresses the overwhelming needs of children with illness. Specially trained black belt martial artists teach breathing, visualization, and relaxation techniques, in addition to traditional martial arts moves to help empower the children and provide them with a sense of power, peace and purpose. Martial arts classes, support during hospital & clinic procedures, uniforms, and transportation to and from classes are provided to families at no cost. Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg, founder and director of Kids Kicking Cancer, holds a First Degree Black Belt in Choi Kwang Do. Rabbi G (as he is fondly called by his students) lost his first child to leukemia at the age of two and brings a wealth of personal experience and sensitivity to dealing with children and families facing life-threatening illness. His commitment to ease the pain of very sick children, and his dream of bringing healing through the empowering focus of the martial arts, resulted in the creation of Kids Kicking Cancer in June of 1999. Rabbi G’s experience in the martial arts, as a spiritual leader and as a parent who can identify with other parents facing serious disease, has provided him with remarkable insight into issues facing children and families with a diagnosis of cancer. |
