Program: What is Rotary? Why are we Here? What makes us Special? Those are some of the questions that were brought up and answered today in front of a packed house of current members and guests who we hope will be able to find out for themselves. Videos were shown illustrating the great things that Rotary Clubs around the world are doing. Charles discussed the importance of the role that Rotary has in the Eradication of Polio. Several Birmingham Rotary Projects that are ongoing and what makes us a wonderful club to be a part of are:
1) International Grant Programs: Molly Swart stated that our club is once again the recipient of a grant for a third water well in Uganda.
2) Endowment: Grant requests were distributed to TCH, Bound Together the Birmingham YMCA to name a few. David Palmer spoke about the importance of the funds and how a few fellow Rotarian’s began the Endowment Fund several years ago.
3) One of the many opportunities that Rotarian’s can help is volunteering at Gleaners. John Mucha discussed the upcoming event and the importance of our continued relationship.
Another wonderful and fulfilling opportunity is Hope Warming Center in Pontiac. Bill Roy gave an overview of our past visits and how Rotarian’s offer up time and food.
4) Wendee introduced the host family for our exchange student Jose Mucarsel. Jose also
graced us with his presence along with his host brother Dalton. They were challenged to sing the Seaholm fight but did not step up to the challenge. Fran Sanchez, last year’s exchange student is doing well and some of us still communicate with him on facebook.
