Speaker Host: David Palmer
Guest Speaker/Program: Chef Phil Jones from City Foods Community Concepts.
Chef Phil spoke passionately about the need to educate our children (community wise) about the need to eat better and think about our meals. Less meat and buy locally.  He encourages our youth to enter into the food business as a career and will mentor them for up to a year to find the right fit, pointing out that they can easily earn 6 figures in his industry. He has been a two term member of the Detroit Food Policy
Council and is now emeritus. He is very active locally and nationally with food policy issues, participates in the James Beard society and is a member of Michelle Obama’s school lunch program.  He is also an advocate of Slow Food a national program born out of the belief that “fast” is adversely impacting us and that a meal shared is a story told.
Mark Anderson asked the first question and in case you missed his joke, he mentioned his past employment as a food server (we have all done that, haven’t we?) not to create “Street Cred” but to point out that foods we used to garnish plates with – Parsley and Kale – is now a main part of each meal, Chef Phil did agree that Fresh and local is good, as is organic, but opined that the word “organic” has been hijacked by big companies, and that local is safer than organic.
To learn more about all the great work he performs go to www.thecitryfoodproject.com.

The meeting was concluded with a rendition of SMILE!.

Our speaker next week is Curtis Shewell from the Shewell Memorial Fund.

Happy Thanksgiving.
