One Rotary Summit: "The Amazing Power of Story"
Sep 14, 2019 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM

The ability to tell a story is perhaps one life’s most useful skills.

Stories are certainly a great way to retain members and gain new Rotarians.

Smart leaders use stories to motivate team members and inspire high performance.  Savvy salespeople tell stories to encourage prospects to become customers.  Parents use stories to inspire good behavior from their children.

Yet, most people don’t really know how to tell a story.

The creation of a powerful narrative cannot be ad-libbed, but it can be shaped and sculpted, especially if you are familiar with the narrative essentials.

International author and speaker (and our D6380 Governor in 2016-17), Michael Angelo Caruso, will show us how to use the power of narrative in Rotary, at work and at home.

At this unique One Rotary Summit, you'll have tons of fun as you sharpen your story-telling skills and learn how to:

  • Stage and frame the story

  • Learn to pick up signals that people are ready for your story

  • Grow your Rotary club

  • Develop a flair for storytelling

  • Establish (and deliver) positive expectations

  • Master the two-minute "signature story"

  • Customize your story for each of the four main personality styles

  • Raise more money

  • Read your audience better

  • Stay on message

  • Get people to act on your story such as attend an event or join your club

  • Increase fundraising

  • Get a promotion at work

Get the power of story on Saturday morning, September 14 in Ann Arbor.  Register today!

$20 gets you breakfast beverages and a barbecue meal after the program!

Visit https://rotary6380.org/events/calendar to register.

Hope Warming Center
Sep 17, 2019 7:15 PM – 9:00 PM
Sign up with Bill Roy to either provide food for the residents at Hope Warming Center or to help out serving that night.

For those who are serving, we usually arrive at approximately 7:15 p.m., which gives us plenty of time to set up.  Dinner usually starts at 8:00, and we are cleaned up and leave by 9:00.

Due to the fact that the HWC has a small kitchen and we have a tremendous turnout, it would be easier if Bill Roy could come by and pick up items from those who are preparing food but not serving.  Please let him know.

Paul Wells - Interim Chief

Birmingham Fire Department

Sep 30, 2019 12:00 PM

Paul Wells didn’t expect to become Birmingham’s fire chief when he began suiting up for the Oakland County city more than two decades ago. It was more of a natural progression as his career evolved with training, expertise and leadership roles.

He agreed late last year to serve as interim chief when John Connaughton retired from the position after nearly four decades. Then, Wells officially said yes to his department’s top position.

Birmingham City Council appointed Wells, 41, fire chief on Aug. 5. He will oversee at least 30 firefighters, most trained as paramedics, to cover a community of about 20,000 residents and 1,400 businesses including those within The Rail District. The Rail District has become known for its art galleries, antique shops and restaurants.

While managing an annual spending plan of about $6 million, Wells wants to invest in technology and training so that the agency can continue to be the best department possible. “I want to make sure we’re always striving to be the latest and the greatest,” Wells said.

Wells began with the Birmingham Fire Department as an emergency medical technician and firefighter in August 1998.

Over the years, he has served as EMS coordinator, lieutenant/paramedic, captain, and assistant fire chief. He graduated from the Eastern Michigan University Fire Staff and Command Executive Leadership Program in 2017 and received a bachelor’s in science degree in fire administration in 2018.

Wells has been married to his wife, Amanda, for 14 years. They have two children – Evelyn, 12, and Pauly, 10. Pauly and his dad share an April 8 birthday.

Maggie Razdar

Kids Standard

Nov 04, 2019

Maggie Razdar, the founder and President of Kids Standard Publication, is passionate about inspiring children to succeed in areas of their interest.

When her two boys were in a middle school in Syracuse, New York, Razdar felt that many children started to lose touch with reading, writing, and researching, due to the obsessive influence of digital technology. To offset this influence, in 2009, she launched Kids Standard Publication, which quickly became very successful. In 2011, Razdar’s family moved to Clarkston, Michigan, where she began working with local schools to provide students with the opportunity to share their voices in her publication.

The first Michigan-based issue of the magazine was released in March of 2015, and it immediately received outstanding feedback from parents, teachers, students, and local professionals.

“Even more important than writing itself,” says Razdar, “is the process of doing research, learning, and thinking, which develops dispositions of a good writer.”
Maggie’s educational background includes a degree in Chemical Engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. She also studied Metaphysical Science and holds a number of business and technical certifications.

Razdar is an active member of many local organizations. She also belongs to The National Association of Professional Women.

As an accomplished business owner, Maggie inspires hundreds of people with her great success. In 2000, she was recognized in ‘The Elite Who’s Who!’ and received ‘The Outstanding Female Business Owner’ award in recognition of her ability to help others achieve excellence and strong leadership skills.

Despite her professional achievement, Razdar’s greatest achievement is her two sons, who are currently students at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. They sparked her desire to establish this non-profit organization, which aims at improving well-being and development of all children.

John F. Wukovits - Author

New Book - Dogfight Over Tokyo - World War II

Nov 11, 2019

Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, then attended high school in Michigan after the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company transferred my father to the Detroit area. After attending Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit, Michigan, I enrolled at the University of Notre Dame and received a bachelor's degree in history in 1967. I then studied American History for one year at Michigan State University, earning a master's degree in 1968. I have long been fascinated with the Pacific Theater of World War II. In the fourth or fifth grade, I read a book about the Battle of the Coral Sea—and was hooked!

I have researched World War II history for more than thirty years, focusing mainly on the Pacific Theater.  In addition to my  books, which are described elsewhere on this website, I have written two chapters for a World War II book published by HarperCollins for the Library of Congress in 2004, as well as biographical essays on Admiral George Dewey and Admiral William Halsey that have been included in different collections.  In addition, my writing has appeared in more than twenty-five magazines, including WWII HISTORY, MILITARY HERITAGE, NAVAL HISTORY, and AMERICAN HISTORY.  Along the way, I have interviewed close to 400 veterans of both theaters of the war.

As part of my work, I have been fortunate to appear in various television productions. Oliver North interviewed me as his chief historian for an episode about Wake Island for his Oliver North's War Stories series on Fox Television. The History Channel asked me to be the main historical consultant and on-air commentator for the ten-part series, Pacific: The Lost Evidence, which is frequently rerun. BookTV has also aired some of my book presentations and signings.     In June 2005 I retired after teaching junior high school History and Language Arts for more than thirty years. Happily, I found teaching and writing very compatible—they both require the ability to condense complicated topics into something people can grasp. I am currently a member of three historical/writing organizations—the Organization of American Historians, the Society for Military History, and the Golf Writers' Association of America.

Growing up in Akron, Ohio and having the chance to play the Firestone Country Club almost every summer day as a youth, I developed a love for golf that has never diminished. In writing articles for GOLF Magazine, MICHIGAN GOLFER, and other publications, I have been able to meet and personally interview figures such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Phil Mickelson.

I have three daughters—Amy, Julie, and Karen—and four grandchildren—Matthew and Megan  Dickerman, and Emma and Kaitlyn Lastra. When I'm not writing or teaching, I like to golf, read, and jog.

Team Turkey 2019 is coming up!

Here's what we need:

  • Drivers to deliver the morning of Thanksgiving 11/28/2019 at 7:15 AM - Deliveries should be done by 10:30 am.
  • Nominated families to receive a meal.  Check with your churches, schools, public service (police, fire, etc) to see if they know of deserving families.  Families can be entered on our website at RotaryTeamTurkey.org or given to Regan Gilshire in person or emailed to BirminghamRotaryClub@gmail.com.
  • If you are unable to deliver on the Thanksgiving day, we are collecting donations towards this service project to add gift cards to go with the meal.  If you would like to make a donation, please contact Regan Gilshire at 248-224-7879.

We are delivering 8-person fully cooked Thanksgiving meals on Thanksgiving to deserving families in the community! In coordination with Troy, Birmingham, West Bloomfield, Sterling Heights, Utica, Lakes Area, and Chelsea Rotary Clubs, we have been able to increase the number of families that receive the Thanksgiving dinners from approximately 30 in 2016, to over 250 families in 2018...and for 2019, we plan to deliver 300!!!

We will be taking a group photo promptly at 7:30 am!!! Please arrive no later than 7:15 am if you are driving so that we can get everyone checked in prior to the photo.

Thanksgiving is a time of togetherness with family and to show gratitude for all that we are blessed with. We believe that everyone deserves to spend time around a table with their families on this holiday and shouldn't have to worry about how to make that happen.

Rotary members believe in Service Above Self and we want to share blessings with deserving families in our community.

Gleaners Food Bank - Service Day
Jan 20, 2020 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Volunteers are needed to help pack food boxes and/or sort food at Gleaners Food Bank (at the Pontiac location) on January 20th at (Time to be determined).

You must wear closed toed shoes in the warehouse (tennis shoes or work boots).  Gleaners cannot have anyone in the warehouse who is wearing sandals, crocs, flats, etc…

Also, Gleaners cannot have purses or bags in the warehouse, and do not have a locked place to store them, so please lock these items in your car or leave them at home. However, they do allow cameras, phones, and keys to be with you in the warehouse.  It is also recommended that you bring reading glasses if you need them, as some of our projects require that we check dates on food.

Please contact John Mucha if you would like to sign up to serve this day!
