May 19, 2020 7:15 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Sign up with Bill Roy to either provide food for the residents at Hope Warming Center or to help out serving that night.
For those who are serving, we usually arrive at approximately 7:15 p.m., which gives us plenty of time to set up. Dinner usually starts at 8:00, and we are cleaned up and leave by 9:00. Due to the fact that the HWC has a small kitchen and we have a tremendous turnout, it would be easier if Bill Roy could come by and pick up items from those who are preparing food but not serving. Please let him know. |

Water Wagon
Jun. 01, 2020 12:00 p.m.
For nearly five decades, Marc Shaye (currently Of Counsel to Lippitt O’Keefe Gornbein, PLLC of Birmingham, MI) has practiced in the area of environmental law and occupational safety, wading through the legal aftermath of hundreds of natural and man-made disasters. “I’ve built my practice based on my professionalism as a lawyer, but also as someone who could spell pH,” he observes with a smile, “I’ve always had an interest in the chemical, engineering and technical aspects of what the law could represent. That kind of discipline has served me for my entire career. But nothing prepared me for what I observed of this disaster and the scope of humanitarian needs in the wake of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Sending thoughts and prayers just wasn’t enough. We knew we had to do anything we could to help.” Fortunately, Marc had connections and a longtime client of like-mind in Bill Korreck, the genius behind the Water Wagon, a fully mobile and self-sustaining water purification system capable of producing about 3,600 gallons of safe drinking water per hour, running round the clock. Built in 2015, the unit was designed specifically as a filling station serving residents in the wake of the water crisis in Flint. Almost immediately following Maria in September 2017, Marc and Bill started working together on a plan to get the Water Wagon to Puerto Rico. |

Mend on the Move
Nov. 09, 2020 12:00 p.m.
Joanne Ewald is a jewelry artist and Founder/Executive Director of Mend on the Move, a 501c3 nonprofit. She has a B.A. in journalism/public relations and worked several years in corporate communications before raising her two children. Ewald is a survivor of child sexual abuse and did not begin the healing process until late in her adult life. Art therapy became a part of her healing process, in particular she gravitated to jewelry design and soon began creating jewelry through her own jewelry making business. This ignited a passion to serve other women recovering from abusive pasts through the creative process. In 2015, she launched a social enterprise, Mend on the Move, that provides employment opportunity and a voice for justice on behalf of victims of abuse.
Mend on the Move employs abuse survivors to create handcrafted jewelry, providing them with an income while building confidence and independence. Survivors learn work skills and accountability, but, most importantly, they are a part of a soothing, therapeutic environment, that supports and encourages, helping them see themselves as worthy and valuable contributors to society.
Ewald has been featured on local television news stories, as well as print publications, such as The Detroit Free Press, Hour Magazine and Seen Magazine. Ewald was selected as one of the top 12 EmpowerHer Pitch finalists for the 2018 Michigan Women’s Forward and Ford Fund’s competition in support of innovative business ideas of women social entrepreneurs.
Mend on the Move was recently named one of the top five jewelry brands in Detroit by Detroit Fashion News and can be found at mendonthemove.org and over 22 wholesale locations throughout metro Detroit and Michigan, as well as nationally. |
