David Palmer atttended the District Gala last Saturday night.  Unfortunately, David was the only member of the BRC in attendance.  Let’s do better next time.  David reported that, despite its lack of attendance at the Gala, BRC was recognized with an award for its contributions to the Polio Plus Fund during the last year.  Rotary has become recognized as a major force in the fight against polio and has a “seat at the table” when the various organizations like WHO, the Clinton Foundation, and the Gates Foundation meet to discuss eradication of polio.  The fight is going well. Africa has now been declared a polio free zone, and there is talk of setting a date for the complete eradication of polio.  The last case was diagnosed 6 weeks ago, and lets pray for 7.  We have a current drive going, spearheaded by Wendee Haugh.  Larry Sherman has pledged a matching grant up to $1,000.00, so please be generous.

Chris McLogan introduced our speaker Elizabeth Lukenbach of the Estate Planning department of Jaffee, Raitt, Heuer & Weiss PC in Southfield.  Elizabeth observed that 7 out of 10 people die without even a minimal estate plan.  While an in-depth explanation of estate planning would take hours, Elizabeth had time to explain the differences between and uses of a will, trust, power of attorney, patient advocate designation, use of joint ownership and allowing an estate to pass by Michigan law of intestate succession.

Chris Winans adjourned the meeting at 1:25 p.m.  Next meeting is November 16th, Visitors Day Speaker will be Sheena Monnan, former Miss Pennsylvania, on topic of Conflict Management.
