Speaker:
Renee Hintz is the Executive Director of Michigan Legacy Art Park. In this position since 2006, Hintz provides leadership and direction to the overall operations of and fundraising for the sculpture park.
Since opening in 1995, Michigan Legacy Art Park has gone from one man’s vision to share Michigan’s unique history through the lens of art and sculpture, to being the cultural and community asset it is today.
Founded by the late internationally acclaimed artist David Barr (b. 1939 – 2015), the Art Park is a natural extension and reflection of his work and global influence. Barr envisioned creating a place in nature for artists to install art inspired by the stories of the people, events and natural resources that continue to shape the legacy of Michigan. Committed to artistic excellence, the objective remains the same today: curate a collection of permanent and ephemeral works of art for the purpose of engaging visitors with a visual, intellectual and emotional experience to deepen their understanding of Michigan’s history, culture and environment.
A few points about the Art Park:
Located on 30 acres in Thompsonville, the park is leased long-term for $1 per year from Crystal Mountain, where the park is located.
There are 47 outdoor sculptures along the almost 2 mile hiking trail. The sculptures reference events in Michigan’s history, including geology, environment and culture.
There are also 31 poetry stones within the park.
The Art Park presented its 20th concert season of Summer Sounds in 2015 featuring musicians from across the state.
Several improvements have been made in 2014-2015 through funds raised through the park’s Art Access for All capital campaign. The $500,000 campaign is 66% funded and will end June 30, 2016. Some of those improvements include:
1. A rebuilt amphitheater shell, deck, and stairs.
2. A new, accessible trail, providing for visitors of all ages, needs and abilities.
3. A new retaining wall and stairs to the upper trail beyond the amphitheater.
4. A new sculpture acquisition, Communications Vine by Eric Troffkin, a symbolic piece representing the growth of cell towers and communications technology within the Michigan landscape.
5. An expanded “outdoor classroom,” at the Mo and Linda White Discovery Grove, a learning venue for schoolchildren who visit the park on field trips.
6. Hired Education Director Patricia Innis.
7. Built a much-needed storage building
The Art Park celebrated 20 years in September 2015. Our signature fundraising event, the Legacy Gala, was the celebratory affair held August 21.
Over 10,000 visitors come to the Art Park each year.
