Program Topic:
Latest Developments at HAVEN, including domestic violence and sexual assault trends. (HAVEN is a nationally recognized nonprofit leader that provides programs to promote violence-free homes and communities, and helps victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse- https://www.haven-oakland.org
Why HAVEN?  Stephanie indicated that her greatest mission is to assist those with violence in their lives:  it could be an elderly woman, a younger woman, an infant, a man or a child.
Stephanie shared some interesting and yet startling facts:
•    1 in 3 women are victims of domestic violence
•    1 of 33 men are sexually abused
•    Violence is more prevalent that hunger and homelessness
HAVEN has existed for 40 years to help those who find themselves in domestic or sexual abuse. If you need help and can get to their location in Pontiac, they will help you.
One of HAVEN’s programs for youth is Preventive Education.  They bring their program to children as young as kindergartners up to College students.  Each message is tailored for the appropriate age group and both girls and boys.  The Detroit Lion’s organization partnered with HAVEN to donate $250 000 to this preventive program just for young men.
HAVEN also offers a 24/7 365 day year crisis / phone line where victims, or friends/family of victims can get help. They partner with other social service organizations and agencies to find the whole treatment for the problem.
HAVEN has a Shelter which serves approximately 200 individuals throughout the year.  The average stay at the shelter is 37 days.
Another significant program at HAVEN  is legal advocacy for the victim.  HAVEN will assist the victim in navigating the legal system.
HAVEN provides forensic exams for victims.  They have specialized equipment which can help diagnose future bruising, etc.  At one time this program served those ages 12 years through the elderly.  Now the program is available to infants.
HAVEN has a beautiful new building in Pontiac and they rely heavily on volunteers.  Tours are available of the site.  Please find immediately following a wish list for donated items needed for HAVEN.
Following Stephanie’s remarks a brief question / answer period followed.

Acting President Linda dismissed the meeting after a rousing rendition of Smiles.
